Traversing the Borders of Black Belonging

South Africa is facing resurgence of anti-migrant sentiment and violence directed largely at citizens of other African countries. The moment raises a key question for the Black world: How might hard-fought claims to citizenship be reconciled with acting in solidarity with a global Black polity? Black Consciousness Day in Brazil—A Celebratory Protest

Every year on 20 November, Brazil observes Black Consciousness Day (Dia Nacional de Zumbi e da Consciência Negra). It is a moment to remember the country’s long history of Black resistance and to celebrate the contributions of Afro-Brazilians to every part of Brazilian life. In its second year as a public holiday, the date marks the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, the leader of one of the most famous quilombo communities of people who escaped enslavement and built free societies against the odds.
