Ronald Wesso

Co-Director, Beneficial Technologies

South Africa

I live in Johannesburg and work as a researcher, writer and popular educator supporting anti-racist, feminist, labour and community movements. My focus is on movement building strategies in the face of extractivist, neoliberal capitalism. I am based at Bentec, a knowledge engagement collective supporting struggles for social and environmental justice.

I became an activist when I joined the rebellion of high school learners against the Apartheid system in the 1980s and have stayed active since then in labour, land and community movements. Since 2005, I have worked as a researcher and educator in different civil society organisations, focusing on supporting self-organised struggles of the oppressed.

I have written widely on matters of social justice and movement building, including the recent popular education manual 'Behind the Scenes of Extractives: Money, Power and Community Resistance' published by the global Count Me In! consortium of feminist groups.

My favourite pastimes are playing tennis and going for walks with friends.
